It may not even be the hardest part.

For coaches, creators, and spiritual entrepreneurs building communities around their work, one of the most frustrating patterns looks like this:

Someone discovers you.

They visit your Skool About page.

They join.

And then they disappear.

No introduction.

No comments.

No classroom progress.

No meaningful relationship.

And eventually, no path toward becoming a client.

During this week’s Monetize Your Mission Mastermind, John Missikos of Leverage Lab joined us from Australia to explore why this happens and how community owners can begin fixing it.

John approaches the problem differently from many marketers.

He comes from engineering.

His basic philosophy is simple:

Measure the number. Make an adjustment. Measure it again.

That mindset can change how you look at community growth.

You Can’t Fix What You Can’t See

Most community owners know something isn’t working long before they know exactly what it is.

Maybe people aren’t joining.

Maybe they’re joining but never participating.

Maybe the community feels active but no one is moving toward your offers.

Those are different problems.

They require different solutions.

John separated the early community journey into two important issues:

Attract.

Can you get the right people through the door?

Activate.

Once they’re inside, can you get them to take a meaningful action?

Trying to solve an activation problem with more traffic will not necessarily help.

Trying to solve a traffic problem by posting more inside your community will not necessarily help either.

The first job is figuring out where the journey is breaking.

Start With Conversion and Traffic

If people are not joining, John recommends looking at two basic numbers:

Your traffic volume.

And your About-page conversion rate.

During the conversation, John shared benchmarks he uses of roughly 4 percent conversion for paid communities and 20 percent for free or freemium communities.

Those aren’t guarantees.

They are reference points.

More importantly, they give you something measurable.

If plenty of people reach your About page and very few join, the page may deserve attention.

If your conversion is healthy but almost nobody reaches the page, changing your headline twenty-seven times probably isn’t the highest-leverage move.

You need traffic.

That distinction alone can save a community owner an enormous amount of unnecessary work.

John Studied More Than 300 Skool About Pages

One of the most interesting parts of our conversation came from John’s analysis of more than 300 About pages.

You might expect the best-performing communities to share a secret formula.

They didn’t.

John compared communities appearing toward the top of Discovery with those appearing much lower.

There was tremendous variation.

His conclusion was essentially that there is no single About-page formula you can blindly copy.

Your community is different.

Your audience is different.

And the person running it is different.

The answer is testing.

Make a change.

Measure it.

Learn.

Repeat.

That may sound less exciting than discovering the perfect template.

It is also much more useful.

Join the Community

Your Difference May Be the Reason People Join

This led us into a conversation about niche communities.

There is a constant fear among coaches and creators that narrowing their positioning will leave them with too small an audience.

But specificity can create clarity.

When someone discovers a community that solves the exact problem they have, they no longer need to choose among fifty vaguely similar alternatives.

They may have found the person for them.

And the niche is not only the topic.

You are part of the positioning.

John brings an engineering brain to community building.

Someone else might approach the same problem intuitively.

Another person might be highly visual.

Another might build around spiritual practice.

The subject can overlap while the audience connection remains completely different.

Your way of seeing the world matters.

The Bigger Leak May Happen After They Join

Getting people through the door was only half of the conversation.

The other challenge raised repeatedly was:

They join, but then they go quiet.

This is where John’s activation strategy becomes especially useful.

Introduce yourself.

Upload a profile photo.

Read the rules.

Watch this video.

By the time we’ve finished helping them, they’re exhausted.

John suggested something much smaller.

Give them one action.

Not four actions.

Not an onboarding scavenger hunt.

One.

Make the First Action Almost Too Easy

A poll can work.

A one-word answer can work.

A quick comment can work.

The point is not that their first action has to transform their business.

The point is movement.

John described how his own onboarding originally asked members to complete several tasks, including taking a photograph of their desk.

Each additional request created another decision.

Another bit of friction.

Another reason to think, “I’ll come back and do that later.”

Later often becomes never.

A tiny action changes the experience.

The member participates.

They have crossed the invisible line between observing the community and being part of it.

That’s activation.

Don’t Confuse Automation With Connection

Automation can be useful.

It can also become invisible.

John compared generic automated communication to banner blindness in advertising.

People learn to recognize patterns.

They know what a mass-generated welcome message feels like.

That doesn’t mean you need to personally write a novel to every person who joins.

It means context matters.

One of the best examples in the conversation came from Kerrie Wearing.

Kerrie had changed her onboarding so that the first ask was smaller. Then, several days later, she went back to a member’s original answers and personally referenced something the person had told her.

The response changed.

Why?

Because the conversation wasn’t:

“Hi, how are you enjoying the group?”

It was about that person’s actual life and actual challenge.

They felt seen.

That connection made it easier for the member to participate publicly later.

Your Join Questions Are More Valuable Than You Think

John pointed out another way to make this practical.

Look at the questions people answer when they request to join your community.

Those answers can give you the context for your next conversation.

Instead of collecting information because Skool lets you create membership questions, design those questions intentionally.

Ask something that helps you understand why the person is there.

Then use the answer.

For a coach, that might be the transformation they’re working toward.

For a creator, it might be where visibility is breaking down.

For a meditation community, it might be the obstacle preventing consistency.

For a stitching community, it might be what the member hopes the practice will give them.

Now your follow-up can become personal without becoming complicated.

Find the Daily Win

Activation becomes even stronger when members have a reason to return.

We explored that idea using Rev. Evelyn Bourne’s intuitive stitching community.

Evelyn has a daily stitching practice. She adds to an eight-foot piece of cloth every day and often shares an image of that day’s work.

The community opportunity became obvious during the conversation.

What if members had their own tiny daily win?

Post today’s stitching progress.

Share a photo.

Add a few words.

Done.

That works because the activity is connected to the reason people joined.

It isn’t engagement for engagement’s sake.

It reinforces the transformation.

This is an important distinction.

A random “What’s everyone having for breakfast?” post might get comments.

That doesn’t necessarily strengthen your community.

The strongest participation rituals help members become the person they entered the community to become.

Consistency Creates Community Habits

A useful recurring action can eventually become part of someone’s routine.

Inside The You World Order, our Notes Boost thread works this way.

People know it’s there.

They share their Substack Notes.

They support other writers.

And the action gives them something they already want: more visibility.

The community interaction is attached to an outcome.

Once a useful activity happens consistently, members know what to expect.

They don’t have to rediscover how to participate every day.

That predictability matters.

Ask Where Your Best Members Came From

Evelyn also shared that YouTube had suddenly begun sending people into her community.

Instead of assuming why, the next question became:

Which video did you watch that made you want to join?

That one question can reveal an enormous amount.

Maybe the video you think is converting people isn’t the one doing it.

Maybe people are interested in something you considered secondary.

In Evelyn’s case, another creator told her he enjoyed the almost-ASMR quality of watching and hearing the stitching itself.

That sensory, meditative element may be part of what makes her content distinct.

The audience often notices the value before we have language for it.

Ask them.

Your Members Can Tell You What the Community Wants to Become

One of the most useful things a community owner can learn is when to stop guessing.

Talk to people.

Watch what they respond to.

Notice what they ignore.

Ask what brought them in.

Ask what they’re working toward.

Ask what gets in the way.

Then listen.

Sometimes the community you originally imagined is not exactly the community your audience wants.

That isn’t failure.

It’s information.

Don’t be afraid to pivot.

Engagement Is Not the Final Goal

A lively community is wonderful.

But for a mission-based entrepreneur, sustainability matters too.

Your business cannot run indefinitely on generosity alone.

Visibility needs somewhere to lead.

Community participation needs somewhere to lead.

For some members, the free community will be enough.

Others will want deeper help.

That is where your offer becomes part of the member journey rather than an interruption to it.

The point is not to pressure every community member into buying something.

The point is to make the next step visible for the person who is ready.

Mission-based income allows you to keep doing the work.

Measure. Adjust. Measure Again.

John’s engineering philosophy may be the simplest framework from the entire conversation.

Don’t rebuild your entire business because a number looks wrong.

Find the leak.

If people aren’t reaching your community, work on traffic.

If people reach the About page but don’t join, work on conversion.

If they join and disappear, work on activation.

If they’re active but never progress toward your offer, examine the monetization path.

Then change something small enough that you can understand the result.

Measure.

Adjust.

Measure again.

There is no universal perfect Skool community.

There is only the experience you’re creating for the people you’re here to serve.

And sometimes the next breakthrough begins with one very small action.

You know what healthy communication is supposed to sound like.

You understand boundaries.

You may have read the books, completed the programs, and learned how to regulate your tone.

Then something happens in the moment.

Your partner questions you. A team member pushes back. A client brings another crisis. Someone does not follow through.

Before you can choose the grounded response you intended to give, another part of you takes over.

That is the deeper territory explored in this conversation with , a human integration facilitator, CEO of The Jungle, and former professional Muay Thai fighter.

Hannah works with founders, leaders, high performers, individuals, and couples to identify the unconscious patterns influencing their relationships.

Her central message is both confronting and freeing:

The pattern may not be happening because you lack communication skills.

It may be happening because part of your system still believes it must protect you.

High Performance Does Not Always Create Connection

High performers often communicate effectively in professional environments.

They can negotiate, present, solve problems, manage teams, and make difficult decisions.

Yet professional competence does not automatically create emotional safety or intimacy.

Hannah describes high performance as a form of performance in the literal sense. It is something a person has learned to do exceptionally well.

For some people, achievement becomes connected to worthiness.

They receive attention when they win.

They feel valued when they produce.

They learn that being competent, useful, controlled, or impressive creates approval.

That strategy may lead to professional success. It can also create distance from the vulnerable, uncertain, emotional parts of the self.

A person can become highly skilled at operating from the mind while remaining disconnected from what is happening in the body.

This matters because intimacy asks for something different from achievement.

It asks us to be seen without performing.

It asks us to state needs we cannot guarantee will be met.

It asks us to hear another person’s experience without immediately defending our identity.

It asks us to stay connected when control is no longer available.

The Reaction Beneath the Reaction

A strong reaction often appears to be about the current event.

The current event may only be the trigger.

A team member’s resistance may remind a leader’s nervous system of being ignored, dismissed, or disrespected.

A partner’s silence may activate an old fear of abandonment.

A request for support may activate the belief that love depends on being useful.

A disagreement may trigger the need to prove that you are right because being wrong once felt unsafe, humiliating, or rejecting.

This does not excuse harmful behavior.

It gives us a more useful place to investigate it.

Instead of asking only, “Why is this person behaving this way?” we can also ask:

What is happening underneath this reaction?

What does this moment represent to me?

What am I afraid will happen if I am not right?

What does this part of me believe it is protecting?

That shift from judgment to curiosity creates room for a different response.

Repeating Patterns Are Information

One of Hannah’s strongest invitations is to notice what keeps repeating.

Perhaps people continually fail to follow through with you.

Perhaps you repeatedly feel unseen in relationships.

Perhaps every team eventually develops the same conflict.

Perhaps you attract people who need saving.

Perhaps you keep becoming the responsible one, the fixer, or the person who carries everything.

It is tempting to conclude that the problem exists entirely outside of us.

Sometimes another person is genuinely behaving irresponsibly or unfairly.

Yet when the same dynamic appears across multiple relationships, workplaces, clients, or partnerships, the repetition may be offering information.

It may reveal an unconscious role you keep entering.

It may show you the behavior you tolerate.

It may expose the expectations you have not communicated.

It may point to the emotion you are trying not to feel.

Recognizing your role is not the same as blaming yourself.

Blame says, “Everything is my fault.”

Responsibility says, “I am willing to examine the part of this pattern that belongs to me.”

That distinction is where agency begins.

The Hidden Cost of Rescuing

Hannah shares a personal realization about rescuing people.

She believed she had already worked through her people-pleasing patterns. Then she noticed that people with enough drama or a compelling enough story could still pull her into rescuing.

The pattern was costing her money, energy, and nervous system capacity.

Rescuing can look generous from the outside.

It can feel loving, compassionate, or responsible.

But rescuing often contains an unspoken exchange.

The rescuer may be trying to avoid the discomfort of watching another person struggle.

They may be trying to become indispensable.

They may be offering someone else what they once needed but did not receive.

They may believe that love means preventing people from experiencing consequences.

The difficulty is that rescuing can keep both people inside the pattern.

One person learns that distress brings intervention.

The other learns that they must keep intervening to feel safe or valuable.

Neither person gets to stand fully on their own feet.

Witnessing Is Not Abandoning

During the conversation, Jill shares a lesson from her daughter:

Sometimes people need someone to stand there and witness what they are experiencing. They do not need that person to solve the problem.

That idea is especially important for coaches, healers, leaders, parents, and naturally empathetic people.

Witnessing does not mean becoming cold or withholding support.

It means creating space without taking ownership of another person’s process.

It may sound like:

“I can see that this is difficult.”

“I trust that you can find your next step.”

“Would you like support, advice, or simply a place to process?”

“What do you notice when you sit with this?”

Rescuing provides the answer before the other person has the opportunity to discover it.

Witnessing helps the person hear their own answer.

That difference can reduce resistance and strengthen self-trust.

Why Advice Often Creates Rebellion

Many people have experienced this cycle:

Someone asks for help.

You give them a thoughtful answer.

They agree.

They follow the advice briefly, ignore it completely, or return with the same problem.

More advice is offered.

Frustration grows on both sides.

Hannah suggests that continual instruction can activate a rebellious response.

A part of the person may hear the advice as control, criticism, or proof that someone else knows them better than they know themselves.

Even excellent information may fail to create change when it does not belong to the person receiving it.

Lasting change becomes more likely when people discover the insight through their own awareness.

A coach can provide structure, questions, and safety.

The client still needs to experience the recognition internally.

Information becomes transformative when it lands inside a framework the person understands and claims as their own.

Returning to the Body

Analytical people are often trained to solve life through thought.

They gather information.

They compare options.

They build plans.

They search for the correct explanation.

Those skills are valuable, but they may not reveal the full pattern.

The body often responds before the conscious mind has formed a story.

A tightening in the chest may appear before defensiveness.

A heavy sensation in the shoulders may accompany the feeling of carrying too much.

A clenched jaw may signal the words that have not been spoken.

A desire to leave may appear before the person can name what feels unsafe.

Body awareness does not require forcing an interpretation.

It begins with noticing.

Where do you feel the reaction?

What is the sensation like?

What changes when you stay with it for a moment?

What emotion might need acknowledgment?

What does this part of you want you to understand?

People who have spent years operating from their minds may find these questions unfamiliar.

That unfamiliarity is not failure.

It is the beginning of a new relationship with the self.

Leadership Begins Inside the Leader

The patterns we carry do not remain confined to private relationships.

They influence how we lead.

A leader’s unmet need for approval may make honest feedback difficult.

A fear of conflict may produce unclear expectations.

A need to be right may silence useful perspectives.

A rescuer pattern may create dependent teams.

Unprocessed shame may cause a leader to react defensively when challenged.

These patterns can spread through an organization.

People carry workplace stress home. They bring relational stress back to work. What begins between two people can gradually shape an entire culture.

This is why human integration is relevant to leadership.

A healthier organization is not created only through better systems, policies, or communication scripts.

It is also created by leaders who can notice their reactions, remain curious, and separate the present situation from the older pattern it has activated.

When people feel seen, heard, and understood, defensive reactions often soften.

That does not remove accountability.

It makes accountability more human and more effective.

Relationships Are Built by Two Whole People

The idea that two halves become one can sound romantic.

It can also create the expectation that another person should complete, heal, or regulate us.

Hannah and Jill offer a different image.

A relationship contains two individual people who are each responsible for their own patterns.

Partners influence each other. Their emotional states affect the relationship. They may begin to anticipate and respond to each other’s reactions.

Still, each person brings their own history, fears, protective strategies, and unmet needs into the relationship.

A partner can support healing.

They cannot complete it on someone else’s behalf.

Healthy intimacy is not the disappearance of individuality.

It is the meeting of two people who are increasingly able to recognize what belongs to them.

A Different Question to Ask

The next time a familiar conflict appears, pause before reaching for the perfect response.

Ask a different question.

Not only:

“What should I say?”

Also ask:

“What is taking over in me right now?”

“What am I trying to protect?”

“What would feel threatened if I did not react this way?”

“Is this person asking me to help, or am I trying to rescue them?”

“Can I stay present without fixing the outcome?”

“What part of this pattern belongs to me?”

These questions do not provide instant perfection.

They create awareness.

Awareness creates choice.

Choice creates the possibility of a new pattern.

You may feel stuck because you built your life around an identity that no longer fits, or perhaps never truly belonged to you.

That idea sits at the heart of my conversation with Ryan T. Reichert, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, author, speaker, coach, and servant leader.

Ryan spent 23 years in the military, served through multiple combat deployments, and later transitioned into the Fortune 500 world. His life held many of the markers people are taught to pursue: leadership, status, career success, income, family, and responsibility.

Then much of that identity fell away.

Addiction, recovery, divorce, estrangement, career loss, depression, and spiritual questioning forced Ryan to discover who he was without the titles and structures that had defined him.

His rebuilding began with small, repeatable choices.

When Your Roles Become Your Identity

Roles can give life structure and meaning.

Leader.
Spouse.
Parent.
Executive.
Soldier.
Coach.
Provider.

The problem begins when those roles become the only way you know who you are.

The military gave Ryan discipline, physical standards, routine, and a clear mission. After retirement, that external structure was no longer holding everything in place. Within 18 months, he gained approximately 50 pounds and felt his life beginning to unravel.

Without the title, uniform, and expectations, he had to meet the person underneath them.

Sobriety Made Space for the Truth

Sobriety gave Ryan the ability to remain present while major parts of his life were ending.

He moved through separation, divorce, estrangement from his children, career loss, and the end of a 25-year relationship without returning to alcohol.

The pain did not disappear, but he stopped abandoning himself to escape it.

He began recognizing the fear, anxiety, people-pleasing, and lack of boundaries that had shaped many of his choices. Healing meant facing the truth of what he feared, what he valued, and who he wanted to become.

Presence Is Where Change Happens

Ryan described life as having three gears.

Forward is the future.

Reverse is the past.

Neutral is today.

Many people spend their lives worrying about what comes next or replaying what has already happened. Yet today is the only place where action is possible.

Today is where you take the walk.

Today is where you tell the truth.

Today is where you set the boundary.

Today is where you remain sober.

Today is where you complete one action that proves you have not abandoned yourself.

The Three Daily Wins

Ryan’s rebuilding process became a practical method he calls the three daily wins:

• One physical win

• One mental win

• One spiritual win

These wins do not need to be dramatic.

His first physical win was walking his dog around the apartment building during a season of depression. That small walk eventually became a consistent routine.

His mental win grew through reading, writing, and taking notes.

His spiritual win developed through church, Bible study, meditation, and intentional time with his faith.

Today, his routine may include the gym, reading his Bible, and meditation.

The details changed as he grew stronger, but the structure remained the same.

The power is not in intensity.

It is in consistency.

Small Wins Build a New Identity

Large goals can feel overwhelming when your identity already feels unstable.

Write the book.
Build the business.
Repair the relationship.
Find your purpose.
Transform your life.

A small win sends a different message:

You can move forward.

You can keep a promise to yourself.

You can complete what you begin.

One walk can become a routine.

One page can become a chapter.

One honest conversation can become a boundary.

One sober day can become a new life.

Each completed action becomes evidence that a different identity is being built.

The FOCUS Framework

Ryan also teaches the FOCUS Framework:

Faith

Faith became Ryan’s foundation after finances, family, fitness, career, and external success proved they could change or disappear.

Lasting identity needs a foundation deeper than income, achievement, approval, or control.

Opportunity

Opportunities often become visible when life becomes quieter and more intentional.

Some become blessings. Others become lessons. Both can move you toward purpose.

Consistency

Transformation is rarely created by one emotional breakthrough.

It is built through repetition.

Consistency turns an intention into a standard.

Unconditional Kindness

Ryan believes kindness is central to leadership.

Smile. Say please. Say thank you. Apologize. Repeat.

Kindness builds trust in families, teams, businesses, and communities.

Standard

A personal standard is a short list of non-negotiable practices that support the person you are becoming.

Ryan recommends keeping it focused. Three to five meaningful commitments may be enough.

Your standard should support your life, not become another form of pressure.

Stop Abandoning Yourself

Ryan once believed he had been abandoned.

Through healing, he recognized that he had also been abandoning himself by running from fear, ignoring his needs, avoiding boundaries, and building his identity around approval and performance.

That realization was not about blaming himself for the past.

It was about reclaiming agency.

The past may explain how a pattern began, but it does not have to control how the pattern continues.

Rebuilding begins when you stop leaving yourself every time life becomes uncomfortable.

A Detour Is Not Always a Reversal

Change can feel like failure when the new path looks smaller than the old one.

Downsizing may feel like going backward.

Changing careers may feel like losing progress.

Rest may feel unproductive.

Starting over may feel like erasing years of work.

Ryan offers another way to see it.

You may not be moving backward.

You may be taking a detour.

A detour does not deny your destination. It changes the route.

The interruption may be giving you space to heal, listen, simplify, and choose differently.

Purpose Can Grow From the Struggle

Ryan describes his work through the phrase “built to break.”

The struggles that appear to be breaking us may also be building the strength required for our purpose.

His military career prepared him to coach, advise, train, and lead.

His recovery became part of his message.

His losses deepened his compassion.

His writing became part of his healing.

His faith became the foundation for his next chapter.

Purpose did not erase what happened.

It gave him a way to use what happened in service of others.

Start With Today

You do not need to rebuild your entire life this morning.

Choose one physical win.

Choose one mental win.

Choose one spiritual win.

Make them small enough to complete and meaningful enough to matter.

Then repeat them tomorrow.

Your new identity will not be built through a title, a perfect plan, or one dramatic moment.

It will be built through choices that remind you:

I am present.

I am participating in my life.

I am no longer abandoning myself.

I am becoming someone I can trust.

Just the other day I was reading an article over here about how Substack is on the ropes because people have subscription fatigue - but in the same breath they said people still subscribe to Hulu and Amazon and a bunch of other services…

Basically, complaining how it’s no longer possible to make a living with subscriptions on Substack - well duh - like every other platform out there it’s evolving.

People subscribe every single day. They subscribe to creators they’ve never met. They subscribe to support friends. They subscribe because they’re curious, because they want access to premium content, because they believe in someone’s mission. Subscriptions haven’t disappeared.

What’s disappearing is the expectation that simply publishing on Substack is enough.

After reviewing hundreds of Substack publications and helping creators build real businesses around them, I don’t think the problem is that people have stopped subscribing.

I think most creators have skipped the foundation.

They’ve brought the habits they learned on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or X to a platform that was never designed to work that way: publish, post a Note, get some engagement, write another article, hope people subscribe, hope a few go paid, hope it somehow turns into a business.

Hope is not a strategy.

Substack is not just a publishing platform. It’s not just a newsletter. And it’s definitely not another social network.

It’s an ecosystem, and every piece of it has a purpose.

Your profile creates a first impression. Your wordmark and publication header establish your identity. And your credibility - you want a wordmark that looks like something more than a stamp on top of your publication…

Each piece of content needs to build towards something - not exist randomly.

Your about page,

your welcome page,

your emails,

your profile,

your publication,

your articles,

your offers - yes, your offers. People expect to know what they are getting from you. If you’re a well known being then maybe it’s enough to offer your content - but for most of us it’s simply not enough.

None of those pieces exists on its own. They either reinforce one another, or they quietly work against each other.

When someone lands on your publication, they aren’t evaluating each feature separately. They’re experiencing one publication, one brand, one promise, one journey. When that journey feels disconnected, readers leave. Not because they have subscription fatigue - because they don’t have enough confidence to subscribe.

And even if they do subscribe, a disconnected publication rarely grows into a sustainable business.

All that said, I don’t believe subscriptions alone are the foundation of a business. A healthy business is built on a thoughtful client journey, with offers that naturally meet people where they are. Substack can become the hub of that journey, but only when every piece is working together toward the same outcome.

When I conduct a personalized Substack Audit for a Founding Member, I’m not reviewing individual features.

I’m evaluating the entire ecosystem.

I’m looking at how every page, every email, every setting, every article, and every offer works together to answer one question:

“Why should someone stay?”

Because that’s the question every successful publication answers.

But over the last few months, I’ve become fascinated by a different question:

Since May 7, my own publication has grown from 893 subscribers to 1,740 in just under 90 days.

Can I attribute every new subscriber to Notes?

No.

But I can confidently say they’ve become one of the biggest drivers of that growth.

And what I’ve discovered is surprisingly simple.

A Note That Explained Substack Better Than Any Marketing Article

One of the examples we looked at during this week’s Monetize Your Mission Mastermind came from community member Soph Newman.

Her Note read:

By the time we met, it had generated nearly 19,000 likes, more than 1,300 restacks, and hundreds of comments.

More importantly...

It had brought roughly 400 new subscribers to her publication.

Why?

Not because it taught anything new.

Because everyone on Substack immediately recognized themselves.

It wasn’t information.

It was identity.

It gave people permission to say:

“These are my people.”

That may be the most powerful sentence in the entire Note.

During the mastermind, one of our members, shared that the line “My people” was the part that resonated most deeply. Everything before it made sense, but those two words created a feeling of belonging. Others echoed the same idea - that Substack felt like the place where they had finally found their corner of the internet.

That’s an important lesson.

People rarely share content because it’s technically impressive.

They share it because it helps them express something they already believe.

The Pattern Appeared Again

Soph’s wasn’t the only example.

I also shared one of my own Notes.

It reached over 183,000 people, generated 15,000+ likes, 1,700 restacks, and brought in 253 new subscribers.

Interestingly...

The two Notes weren’t even about the same topic.

But they shared something much more important.

They both invited people to recognize themselves.

One challenged the way we think about identity.

The other celebrated finding people who understand us.

Different subjects.

The same emotional experience.

Neither Note tried to sell anything.

Neither demanded attention.

They simply gave people something they wanted to carry into conversations with others.

The Goal Isn’t Virality

One of the first things I said during the mastermind was this:

Going viral isn’t really the goal.

The goal is getting your ideas into places where your ideal readers are already spending time. Every now and then a Note takes off in unexpected ways, but the real opportunity is consistently expanding your reach among people who are likely to value your work.

Virality is unpredictable.

Visibility isn’t.

Visibility comes from consistently showing up.

• From participating in conversations.

• From commenting thoughtfully.

• From asking genuine questions.

• From helping other people be seen.

One of the biggest discoveries for many members was realizing that Related Notes are one of Substack’s hidden discovery engines. When you consistently engage with other writers, your own Notes begin appearing alongside theirs, introducing you to readers who may never have found you otherwise.

That’s community.

Not algorithm hacking.

Community Creates Momentum

One thing I love about Substack is that growth isn’t just about publishing.

It’s about participating.

Some of the best opportunities come from:

• Leaving thoughtful comments.

• Replying to everyone who comments on your Notes.

• Restacking work you genuinely appreciate.

• Asking questions that invite conversation.

• Highlighting other writers instead of constantly talking about yourself.

When people interact with your Notes, they’re not simply increasing engagement.

They’re expanding the number of places your ideas can be discovered.

That’s a very different way of thinking about social media.

Use AI to Help - Not Replace You

Another question that came up during the mastermind was whether AI has a place in creating Notes.

I think it absolutely does.

I use AI regularly.

Not to replace my voice.

To help me brainstorm, generate possibilities, and organize ideas more efficiently. During the session, I also shared how scheduling Notes in advance lets me stay consistent while leaving room for spontaneous ideas when inspiration strikes.

The heart of the Note still has to come from you.

AI can help shape the words.

It can’t manufacture genuine connection.

Visibility That Leads Somewhere

Here’s the biggest mistake I see.

People think Notes are the destination.

They aren’t.

They’re the introduction.

A great Note creates curiosity.

That curiosity brings someone to your publication.

Your publication helps them decide whether they want to subscribe.

And over time, trust becomes relationship.

Relationship becomes opportunity.

Soul guidance often works differently.

It may tell someone to decline an opportunity that looks profitable, release a client who appears valuable, stop promoting an offer that seems successful, or wait when every part of the schedule says to move.

The confirmation frequently comes after the decision.

This is why trust matters.

Human Desire and Soul Guidance Are Not the Same

A useful part of spiritual and intuitive growth is learning to recognize the difference between human desire and soul guidance.

Human desire is not wrong.

It carries personality, preference, emotion, excitement, and individuality.

Problems arise when fear, limiting beliefs, old patterns, or immediate gratification begin driving every decision.

Carrie describes the human as something that should not be “driving the bus.”

The soul can lead while the human remains part of the experience.

In the interview, Carrie shares a simple example. A friend invited her to Cabo, and her immediate human response was excitement. A beach trip sounded wonderful.

Her deeper guidance said it was not aligned and would not happen.

The next day, her friend decided not to go.

That experience made the difference easy to see. Human desire said yes. Soul guidance said no.

Developing intuition makes those separate responses easier to recognize.

Why Guidance Can Feel Uncomfortable

Soul guidance does not always offer the easiest option.

It may require:

• Patience

• Discomfort

• A change in plans

• Releasing control

• Facing a limiting belief

• Remaining in an uncertain situation longer than expected

• Taking action without full validation

The human mind often resists these experiences because it is built around familiar patterns.

It wants efficiency and predictability.

Guidance may have a different priority. It may be leading someone toward growth, alignment, protection, or an outcome the mind cannot see yet.

A missed train, delayed plan, lost opportunity, or unexpected obstacle may not always be punishment or failure.

It may be feedback.

The invitation is to pause before forcing the original plan and ask what the experience is showing you.

Energy Hygiene for Coaches, Psychics, and Healers

Carrie also emphasizes the importance of energetic care.

Psychics, healers, coaches, and energy workers often spend their days holding space for other people. Without intentional practices, they may become exhausted, overwhelmed, or emotionally affected by energy that is not their own.

Carrie recommends a consistent morning and evening practice.

A simple energy hygiene routine may include:

• Checking in with your current energy

• Clearing energy that does not belong to you

• Grounding

• Aligning the chakras

• Connecting with your guides, soul, or a higher source

• Setting clear energetic boundaries

• Reflecting at the end of the day

The purpose is not to create a complicated ritual.

It is to become aware of what you are carrying and make intentional choices about what remains in your field.

For coaches and spiritual entrepreneurs, this can support clearer decisions, stronger boundaries, more sustainable service, and reduced burnout.

Feel the Feelings Before Trying to Transcend Them

Spiritual growth is not always peaceful.

Awakening can bring discomfort, grief, confusion, fear, anger, and resistance.

Carrie encourages people to feel those emotions instead of trying to rise above them immediately.

Resistance often gives them more power.

A more grounded process is to experience the feeling, explore why it is present, and ask what older event, belief, or pattern may be connected to it.

Questions might include:

• Why does this feel threatening?

• When have I felt this way before?

• What am I trying to control?

• What belief is keeping this pattern in place?

• What is this situation asking me to learn?

Once the root becomes clearer, the emotional, mental, and energetic patterns can begin to shift.

This is not about bypassing the human experience.

It is about understanding it deeply enough that it no longer controls every decision.

Build Intuitive Trust Through Small Decisions

Many people wait until they face a major business or financial decision before trying to use intuition.

That creates unnecessary pressure.

Carrie recommends beginning with small, low-risk choices.

Ask questions such as:

• What should I wear today?

• What should I make for dinner?

• Which task should I complete first?

• What order should I run my errands?

• Who should I contact today?

• Is this the right time to send this message?

Notice the first response.

Then follow it when the risk is low and observe what happens.

Small confirmations help the nervous system and mind learn that guidance can be trusted.

Even ignoring the message can become useful information.

When someone hears “Tuesday,” chooses Monday, and immediately experiences complications, the result becomes evidence that the original guidance was accurate.

Getting it wrong is not failure.

It can help someone recognize what the correct signal felt like.

Stop Consuming and Start Listening

Carrie shares an unexpected piece of advice she received from her guides: stop listening to so many podcasts and reading so many books.

This does not mean outside information has no value.

It means constant consumption can leave little room for inner guidance.

People often fill every quiet moment with:

• Podcasts

• Books

• Music

• Social media

• Work

• Cleaning

• Planning

• Overthinking

The mind remains occupied, but the deeper self never gets space to speak.

Carrie recommends spending more time in silence while driving, walking, washing dishes, or sitting at home.

The goal is to move attention away from the constant narrative in the head and toward the heart space.

Stillness allows someone to hear what they genuinely want, understand what is blocking them, and connect with a deeper level of consciousness.

Fulfillment Comes From Alignment

Carrie has worked with entrepreneurs earning seven and eight figures, including people generating extraordinary annual revenue.

External success did not automatically make them feel fulfilled.

The missing piece was often connection to purpose.

Money is a valuable tool. It can create access, choice, comfort, generosity, and impact.

But it cannot replace alignment.

A business becomes more meaningful when it reflects the work someone feels called to do, the people they are meant to support, and the transformation they are prepared to lead.

For conscious coaches and spiritual entrepreneurs, intuitive development is not separate from business growth.

It can influence:

• Which clients to accept

• Which offers to release

• What message to share

• When to pause

• Where to invest

• Which opportunities are aligned

• How to protect personal energy

• What kind of impact the business is meant to create

Strategy still matters.

The invitation is to stop using strategy as the only source of direction.

A Simple Practice for Reconnecting With Your Soul

Begin by creating ten quiet minutes without a phone, podcast, book, or task.

Place your attention on the heart space.

Breathe slowly.

Ask one clear question:

What do I most need to understand today?

Do not force an answer.

Notice what arises as a word, feeling, image, memory, physical sensation, or quiet knowing.

Write it down before the mind dismisses it.

Then choose one small action that reflects the guidance.

Trust develops through repetition.

The more consistently someone listens, records, acts, and reflects, the easier it becomes to recognize the difference between fear, habit, human desire, and soul-led direction.

There is nothing wrong with wanting those things.

The difficulty begins when the entrepreneur becomes so focused on personal income that the customer’s needs become secondary.

People notice when every conversation feels like a sales pitch.

They also notice when someone is genuinely interested in helping them solve a problem.

John learned that his results improved when he stopped asking, “How can I make money from this person?” and started asking, “How can I help this person reach their goal?”

That is the foundation of a service-based business.

A life coach does not sell coaching sessions. The coach helps someone move through a challenge.

A spiritual entrepreneur does not simply sell an offer. They help someone move toward greater clarity, alignment, or transformation.

Identify The Burning Problem You Solve

A business becomes easier to understand when the entrepreneur can clearly explain the problem it solves.

The problem should be specific enough that the right person immediately recognizes themselves.

“Helping people improve their lives” is meaningful, but broad.

“Helping new coaches attract their first premium clients without cold outreach” is more tangible.

“Helping busy professionals build an additional income stream without leaving their current job” gives the audience a clear context and outcome.

The more clearly a person understands the problem, the result, and the path between them, the easier it becomes to trust the offer.

This is especially important for coaches and network marketers.

Talking endlessly about a product or company can make the message sound interchangeable with everyone else promoting the same thing.

Teaching people how to achieve a result creates authority.

The product can support the result, but it does not have to be the center of the message.

A Three-Step Content-To-Cash-Flow Model

John teaches a three-step framework for turning content into business growth.

Step One: Become Consistent

The first challenge is not creating perfect content.

It is becoming willing to publish.

Short-form content can be a useful place to begin because it requires less production time and allows entrepreneurs to practice communicating their ideas.

Consistency helps people develop their voice, observe what resonates, and become more comfortable being visible.

The early content may not create immediate sales.

It still has value.

The work may be producing a result, or it may be developing the person capable of producing that result later.

Step Two: Become Strategic

Consistency alone is not enough.

Content should connect with a real audience need.

Useful questions include:

• What is my ideal client worried about?

• What result are they actively trying to create?

• What mistake keeps slowing them down?

• What would help them take one meaningful step today?

Content becomes more effective when it helps before it asks.

A constant stream of “click the link” messages gives people little reason to pay attention.

Teaching, clarifying, encouraging, and solving small problems builds trust.

The audience begins to understand what the entrepreneur knows, how they think, and whether they may be the right person to help with a larger challenge.

Step Three: Automate And Delegate

Once a content process is working, it should become easier to sustain.

That may mean developing templates, recording several pieces of content at once, repurposing one conversation across multiple platforms, or hiring support for editing and publishing.

Automation does not mean removing the human voice.

It means protecting the entrepreneur’s time so they can remain focused on the work only they can do.

The goal is not to create a content machine that never rests.

The goal is to build a system that supports visibility without consuming the entire business.

Stop Finding Buyers And Start Becoming Findable

One of John’s central ideas is simple:

Most entrepreneurs are trying to find people to sell to when they should become more findable to the people who already want what they offer.

There are already people looking for coaches, accountants, consultants, products, communities, and additional sources of income.

The question is whether those people can discover you when the need becomes urgent.

Content creates pathways.

A useful YouTube video can introduce someone to your work.

A clear Substack article can answer a question they have been carrying.

A social post can help them name a problem they did not know how to explain.

A podcast interview can allow them to hear your values, approach, and perspective.

Being findable is not only about appearing in search results.

It is about becoming recognizable, understandable, and trustworthy.

Your Personal Brand Matters More Than The Product

In network marketing, people often focus entirely on the company, compensation plan, or product line.

John shared a principle his mentors taught him:

People do not simply join a company. They join the person leading them.

Two people may offer the same product, but the customer or prospective partner will often choose the person they trust, understand, or relate to most.

That makes personal positioning essential.

What do you believe?

Who do you serve?

What experience do you bring?

What result do you help people create?

Why do you care about the work?

A company can be part of the business, but it should not replace the entrepreneur’s own identity, expertise, and relationships.

The entrepreneur is not simply a representative of an opportunity.

They are responsible for creating the experience around it.

The Work Is Either Working For You Or On You

Entrepreneurs often interpret a missed sale or low-performing post as proof that something does not work.

John shared a different way to view those moments.

The work may be working for you by producing a visible result.

Or it may be working on you by developing your communication, resilience, judgment, and skill.

A conversation that does not create a sale may reveal a better question to ask next time.

A piece of content that receives little engagement may expose a lack of clarity in the message.

An offer that does not convert may show that the audience, promise, or process needs refinement.

These moments are not always evidence of failure.

They can be information.

The danger is repeatedly abandoning the process before the learning has time to accumulate.

Stop Starting Over

Many entrepreneurs become trapped in a cycle of new opportunities.

Affiliate marketing looks promising, so they try it.

Then they move to network marketing.

Then trading.

Then coaching.

Then another platform, business model, or income stream.

Learning many things can feel productive, but surface-level knowledge across several industries rarely creates the same authority as sustained expertise in one area.

Successful entrepreneurs often become very good at one thing first.

They develop skill, reputation, systems, and income.

Expansion comes later.

The constant search for a new opportunity can prevent the current opportunity from ever having enough time to work.

The Four Stages Of The Entrepreneurial Journey

John described four emotional stages many entrepreneurs experience.

Uninformed Optimism

The opportunity is new.

Energy is high.

The outcome feels close and possible.

Informed Pessimism

Reality becomes clearer.

The work is more demanding than expected.

Results may be slower than promised.

The Valley Of Despair

This is where many people quit.

Doubt grows.

The entrepreneur must decide whether to develop the skill required to continue or abandon the path and start again.

Informed Optimism

Progress becomes visible.

The entrepreneur understands the process, recognizes the challenges, and knows they can move through them.

Many people repeatedly experience the first three stages because they leave during the valley and restart with something new.

Progress often comes from staying long enough to reach the fourth.

Count The Cost Before You Commit

Persistence does not mean remaining attached to every opportunity forever.

Some paths are not aligned.

Some models are not sustainable.

Some decisions genuinely need to change.

The important work happens before the commitment.

John recommends identifying what you want that your current situation cannot provide.

What are the five goals your current job or business cannot help you reach?

Would a new opportunity realistically move you closer to those goals?

Are you willing to develop the skills and invest the time required?

Does the outcome justify the cost?

Clear answers reduce the temptation to quit when the excitement fades.

Once the path has been considered carefully and chosen intentionally, the entrepreneur can move forward with greater steadiness.

Build A Foundation Strong Enough To Support The Dream

Passion alone does not create bandwidth.

A person may deeply want to build a business while facing unstable income, exhausting work hours, family pressure, difficult relationships, or constant financial emergencies.

These conditions make the valley of despair even harder to navigate.

John encourages entrepreneurs to stabilize their foundation.

That might mean finding a “business-building job” with predictable hours and income.

It may mean reducing expenses, creating financial breathing room, or waiting several months before making a major investment.

It may also mean addressing relationships or responsibilities that consume the focus needed to build.

Delaying a launch to strengthen the foundation is not the same as abandoning the dream.

Sometimes it is the action that makes the dream sustainable.

Protect Faith, Health, Family, And Time

Time cannot be controlled, but priorities can.

John builds his life around the areas that matter most: faith, work, business, health, family, and reflection.

He also leaves space between commitments.

A schedule in which every minute is accounted for can collapse when one meeting runs late or a family need appears.

The same principle applies to money.

A financial life with no margin makes it difficult to respond to emergencies or opportunities.

Sustainable growth requires some slack.

Space allows people to think, adjust, recover, and make better decisions.

Entrepreneurs can also benefit from conducting regular personal audits.

Ask:

• How has the last week felt?

• Where is the business improving?

• What area has been neglected?

• Are current actions aligned with stated priorities?

• Is this still a serious goal, or has it become a hobby?

Honest reflection protects against building a successful business inside an unsustainable life.

Find A Mentor And A Community

The valley is harder to cross alone.

A mentor can help an entrepreneur recognize predictable challenges, avoid unnecessary mistakes, and see options that are difficult to identify from inside the problem.

The mentor does not need to be at the final destination.

They need to be far enough ahead to offer useful guidance.

Community also matters.

Surrounding yourself with people who understand the journey can reduce isolation and make persistence more realistic.

Support does not remove the work.

It helps people direct their effort more effectively.

Consistent Income Begins With A Different Question

The usual question is:

“Who can I sell to?”

A more useful question is:

“How can I become more useful, visible, and findable to people who already need this?”

That question changes the content you create.

It changes how you speak with potential clients.

It changes the role of selling.

It also changes the kind of business you build.

A sustainable business is not built only through more effort.

It is built through clearer service, stronger positioning, consistent visibility, repeatable systems, aligned priorities, and the willingness to stay through the stage when progress feels slow.

Your work is not simply to convince more people.

Your work is to become the person the right people are already hoping to find.

Are some people going to go all in on AI? Of course they are. Just like there will be people who dig in their heels and refuse to touch it under any circumstances. That’s happened with every major technological shift we’ve experienced. Some people embraced computers. Others insisted they’d never need one. Then it was the internet. Then smartphones. Unless someone decides to go completely off-grid, technology has a funny way of corralling us into a place where we eventually have to decide whether we’re going to adapt or spend our time complaining that the world changed without asking our permission.

I’ve already published my AI statement, and beyond that, I simply don’t care. I’m not trying to hide that I use AI. I also don’t feel the need to apologize for it. It’s a tool. One of many. The quality of what I publish is still my responsibility, just as it always has been.

What fascinates me far more than the scanner itself is why Substack chose to make such a public announcement about it. To me, this feels like a classic case of virtue signaling. Whether that’s actually their intention, I obviously can’t know, but that’s certainly how it comes across to me.

AI simply isn’t what most people are talking about when they talk about why they love Substack. They talk about the writers they’ve discovered, the conversations in the comments, the communities they’ve found, and the freedom to write without chasing an algorithm. That’s the heart of Substack. This scanner feels like a very small piece of the platform that’s suddenly being treated like the main event.

The irony, though, is hard to ignore.

Substack is using AI to determine whether something was written with AI.

I actually laughed when I thought about that. We now have artificial intelligence judging artificial intelligence so humans can decide whether they trust what another human wrote. If that doesn’t make you smile just a little, I don’t know what will.

And yes... before anyone points it out... I used AI to help me write my AI disclosure statement.

What I also find interesting is the amount of attention this has generated. Whether you agree with the decision or completely disagree, people are talking about Substack. Writers are posting about it. People who have never heard of Substack are suddenly hearing its name because everyone has an opinion. Controversy has been a marketing strategy for as long as I can remember. Facebook figured that out years ago. People engage when they’re emotionally invested, and nothing creates engagement quite like giving people something to argue about.

Do I think this scanner is going to change what people read?

Not really.

The people who genuinely care about thoughtful writing aren’t waiting for an AI detector to tell them what deserves their attention. They already know whose work they enjoy. They subscribe because they trust the person behind the words. They come back because that writer consistently makes them think, teaches them something, encourages them, or simply tells good stories.

On the other side, the people who are perfectly happy consuming generic, mass-produced content probably aren’t going to change their habits because of a scanner either.

If someone wants to publish entirely AI-generated articles, they’re going to do it. If someone refuses to use AI for anything, they’ll continue doing that too. I honestly don’t think this announcement moves either group very much.

Can I tell you about my 90 yr old dad? He loves AI Slop on Youtube - he watches those “stories” that are AI generated, have static AI images and an AI voice - not even the good ones. It drives me crazy - but he will sit and listen to them for hours.

His favorite are the Karen stories - Karen is the HOA director doing all kinds of illegal stuff. He especially loves when the underdog is someone in the military.

I tell you this to illustrate there is a market for AI Slop and so long as there is a market for something - that something is going to exist.

What concerns me more is the idea that we’ve somehow convinced ourselves that AI is the thing we need to detect. I don’t think AI is the problem. Mediocre writing is the problem. Generic ideas are the problem. Saying nothing of value is the problem. AI didn’t invent boring content. We’ve had boring content for centuries.

I suspect this announcement is largely intended to placate a particular group of writers who believe there’s only one legitimate way to create. Every creative community seems to have them. They’re often passionate, vocal, and deeply convinced that their process is the “right” one. They’re certainly entitled to that opinion. I’m equally entitled to mine.

My opinion is that readers are smarter than we sometimes give them credit for.

Most of us can tell when something feels empty. We don’t need a scanner to figure that out. We also know when a piece of writing feels personal, thoughtful, and authentic, regardless of whether the author brainstormed with a notebook, ChatGPT, Claude, or while walking their dog.

At the end of the day, I don’t subscribe to people because they used - or didn’t use - a particular tool.

I subscribe because they consistently create something worth reading.

That’s always been the part that mattered to me, and I don’t see this new scanner changing that one bit.

I’ll save you the trouble of scanning this article … AI was definitely involved. Trust me you don’t want me without AI’s filter to reign me in and/or correct my spelling.

It needs direction.

People should understand who the community is for, what result it helps them create, where to begin, and what to do next.

Without that clarity, even a generous and active community can become overwhelming. Members join, look around, see a wall of courses and posts, and quietly leave.

In this Monetize Your Mission Mastermind, we explored how coaches, creators, and spiritual entrepreneurs can create a clearer Skool community experience.

The conversation covered everything from About pages and onboarding to member engagement, Substack traffic, ethical AI, and monetization.

The central lesson was simple:

A community should move people through a meaningful journey.

Your About Page Is More Than an Introduction

The Skool About page is often treated like a short biography or welcome message.

It should do much more.

Your About page is the sales page for your community. It needs to answer four questions quickly:

1. Who is this community for?

2. What are they struggling with?

3. What result can they create here?

4. What should they do next?

Call your people out clearly near the top.

A broad message such as “a supportive community for growth” may sound warm, but it does not help a life coach, health coach, or spiritual entrepreneur recognize that the space was built for them.

Specific language creates recognition.

For example:

“This community helps conscious coaches build visibility, strengthen their authority, and create a consistent path toward aligned clients.”

That sentence identifies the audience and connects the community to a meaningful outcome.

Your About page can then explain what members will find inside, why your approach is different, and what first step they should take.

Use Visuals That Stay Recognizable

Community branding does not need to be complicated.

It does need to be consistent.

Members often scan a list of community icons to find the group they want to visit. Changing the icon repeatedly can make the community harder to recognize.

Choose a clear image and keep it long enough to build familiarity.

For promotional graphics, use large, readable words and avoid busy layouts. Your community image may appear at a small size, especially when it is shown in discovery areas or promotional placements.

A short welcome video can also help.

People connect with people. A simple video that introduces the community leader, explains the purpose of the space, and tells members what to do first can create trust more effectively than polished graphics alone.

It does not have to be perfect.

It only needs to feel real. And sometimes a little hokey goes a long way in making people feel welcome because you come across as both human and not so polished.

Do Not Open an Empty Community

Before opening the doors, create enough structure to help a new member feel oriented.

A strong starting setup may include:

• A pinned Start Here post

• A welcome or introduction thread

• Two or three useful community posts

• One simple classroom resource

• A clear first action

• A small result members can achieve quickly

A paid community with a seven-day trial should help members experience progress during those first seven days.

That early result gives people a reason to stay.

It also shows that the community is built around transformation rather than content consumption.

Too Much Content Can Reduce Engagement

Many community owners assume that more courses create more value.

Members may experience the opposite.

A classroom filled with dozens of lessons, programs, and resources can make people feel behind before they begin.

When everything is available at once, members may not know what matters most.

A better approach is to create a simple path.

Start with one clearly labeled onboarding area. Then organize additional content into categories based on the member’s goal, stage, or next decision. and had some great ideas for tightening up the overwhelm that can happen when new people enter the community.

Skool levels can also be used to unlock new classrooms gradually.

For example:

• Level 1: Start Here

• Level 2: Foundation Training

• Level 3: Visibility Tools

• Level 4: Offer Development

• Level 5: Client Attraction

• Level 6: Advanced Resources

This structure can reduce overwhelm and reward participation.

The goal is not to hide value. The goal is to present value in an order that members can use.

Design Around the Member Journey

There is no single correct Skool structure for every business. Just as there is no blueprint that is right for every situation. I actually think this is what makes Skool so unique - there are some basics - foundations if you will that every community needs to consider but not a one size fits all solution.

A software company may use its community differently from a life coach, course creator, or spiritual practitioner.

The structure should reflect the result you help members create.

Ask:

• What does a new member need first?

• What action creates their first meaningful win?

• What skill should they develop next?

• When are they ready for deeper support?

• What paid offer fits naturally into that journey?

The answers should shape your classroom, events, posts, and offers.

Your community is not a storage area for everything you have ever created.

It is an experience. And if done well can currate the client journey so that everyone benefits from participating.

Use the Calendar to Create Predictability

Recurring events give members a rhythm.

Add regular coaching calls, accountability sessions, coworking meetings, challenges, content threads, and live workshops to the Skool calendar.

Even an event that sends members to a Zoom room, Google Meet, or community post can be added to the calendar.

This helps people know:

• What is happening

• When it is happening

• Where to find it

• Whether it applies to them

Reminders also matter.

Posting an event reminder one hour before, thirty minutes before, and ten minutes before can increase attendance because the event remains visible in the feed.

Consistency builds trust.

Members are more likely to return when they know what to expect.

Make Participation Easier Than Passive Consumption

The community owner should not be the only person creating activity.

Give members simple reasons to participate.

That could include:

• A daily visibility thread

• A weekly wins post

• A collaboration request

• A feedback exchange

• A promotional thread

• An accountability check-in

• A question of the week

In the Learn Substack community, a Notes Boost thread gives members a place to share their Substack Notes and support one another.

This connects community participation to a result members already want: increased visibility.

The best engagement prompts are not random conversation starters. They help members move toward the promise of the community.

Build a Bridge From Substack to Skool

Substack can become an important source of traffic for a Skool community.

Each publication, podcast post, or newsletter can include a natural invitation to join the community.

Templates make this easier as pointed out.

Create several reusable Substack footer sections that explain:

• Who you help

• What your community provides

• What members receive

• Where to join

You can choose the footer that best matches each piece of content.

The message should remain consistent even when the wording changes.

A reader should never have to wonder where to continue the relationship.

Track What Is Actually Happening

Community growth should not be measured by instinct alone.

Review your Skool dashboard regularly.

Look at:

• Visitors

• Traffic sources

• Sign-ups

• Conversion rate

• Engagement

• Member levels

• Upgrades

• Revenue

These numbers reveal where the member journey is breaking down.

A large number of visitors with few sign-ups may point to a weak About page.

Strong sign-ups with low participation may indicate an onboarding or positioning problem.

High engagement with no revenue may reveal that members have no clear paid next step.

Data does not replace intuition, but it helps you apply intuition to the right problem.

The Leverage Lab on Skool

Follow Up With Members Like Real People

An initial automated welcome message is useful.

It should not be the only contact a member receives.

Follow up after they join. Check in when they remain at an early level. Ask whether they found what they needed. Invite them back when they disappear.

A message can be simple:

“You mentioned that you wanted to grow your Substack. How is that going?”

That feels different from a generic automation sequence.

It shows that someone noticed them.

A community becomes valuable when members feel seen, not merely processed.

Use AI Without Replacing the Relationship

AI can support a community.

It can help draft posts, schedule reminders, organize information, summarize conversations, and create starting points for outreach.

Problems begin when AI pretends to be the community leader.

Members may be paying for access, support, feedback, or connection with a real person. Replacing that relationship with an undisclosed AI clone can damage trust.

A grounded approach is to use AI for assistance while keeping human communication human.

Before publishing AI-generated content:

• Add your own experience

• Adjust the language

• Make it specific

• Ask a meaningful question

• Remove generic phrases

• Confirm that it sounds like you

The goal is not to avoid useful technology.

The goal is to protect the integrity of the community.

Engagement Does Not Automatically Create Revenue

The live community audit revealed an important gap.

The community had engaged members and a clear topic, but no paid program or purchase path.

Members could join, learn, and interact.

They could not take a clear next step.

This is a common situation in mission-based businesses.

The creator keeps giving more value because they want to serve. More posts are added. More lessons are recorded. More resources are placed in the classroom.

The audience becomes better supported, but the business does not become more sustainable.

A paid offer is not a betrayal of the community. It actually supports the community - you are helping them most through the journey to get the results they are there to get.

It is simply the next stage of the transformation.

Create One Simple Paid Next Step

The first paid offer does not need to be a massive course.

It could be:

• A four-week live cohort

• A focused workshop

• A small group program

• A paid challenge

• A guided implementation experience

• A premium resource

• A waitlist for deeper support

Choose one specific problem and one useful result.

Then invite the most engaged members to help shape it.

Ask them:

• What is your biggest struggle right now?

• What would you like help implementing?

• What result would feel most valuable?

• What would you pay to learn or complete?

This allows you to capture buyer intent before spending weeks building the program.

Five Quick Monetization Improvements

Several changes can be made in less than an hour.

1. Pin a Post About the Paid Offer

Announce the upcoming program, workshop, cohort, or waitlist.

2. Update the Welcome Post

Add one sentence explaining what deeper support will become available.

3. Add a Call to Action to the About Page

End the page with one clear offer or waitlist link.

4. Message Engaged Members

Ask five active members what they would pay to learn or implement.

5. Ask a Specific Research Question

Create a post asking members about their biggest current challenge.

These actions create more useful information than adding another free lesson.

What Not to Work on Yet

When there is no paid offer, avoid using all your energy to expand the free classroom.

You may not need:

• More free courses

• More daily posts

• More complicated onboarding

• More automation

• A larger resource library

• A complex retention system

Those improvements may become useful later.

First, establish whether your audience will buy a simple offer that solves a clear problem.

That is the next meaningful milestone.

A Practical 30-Day Direction

A simple month-long plan could look like this:

Week One: Clarify

Define the audience, problem, result, and offer.

Review your About page and member journey.

Week Two: Listen

Talk with your most engaged members.

Collect language, questions, desired outcomes, and buying signals.

Week Three: Build

Outline a focused four-week program, workshop, or cohort.

Create only what is needed to deliver the result.

Week Four: Invite

Publish the offer, contact interested members, and enroll the first group.

This process gives you something more valuable than another folder of content.

It gives you evidence.

You learn what members want, what they will pay for, and how your community can support both transformation and mission-based income.

Build the Community Around the Transformation

A strong Skool community does not need to be the largest or busiest.

It needs to be clear.

Members should be able to understand:

• Why they are there

• Where to begin

• What action to take

• How to participate

• What result they are creating

• What deeper support is available

Keep the experience simple enough to follow and human enough to trust.

Your community can strengthen visibility, build authority, nurture aligned relationships, and create a sustainable path toward paid work.

The next step is rarely to add everything.

It is to identify the one thing your members need next.

And though it might be a knee jerk response…

The answer isn’t “start copying and pasting.”

In fact, that’s probably the fastest way to create a publication that’s confusing for both you and your readers.

Instead, think of this as moving into a new home.

Before you start carrying in furniture, you decide which room everything belongs in.

Your content deserves the same treatment.

Step 1: Build the Foundation First

Before you import a single post or upload a single video, take some time to build the structure of your publication.

That means deciding:

• What sections you’ll have

• What topics you’ll regularly write about

• Which content belongs together

• What experience you want readers to have when they arrive

This is where I recommend creating your publication sections.

Your sections become the rooms in your house.

They make it easy for readers to find what they’re looking for instead of digging through months (or years) of unrelated posts.

Step 2: Organize Your Existing Content

Now that you know what your publication looks like, it’s time to inventory what you already have.

Whether your content lives on Patreon, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, your blog, or somewhere else, create a simple spreadsheet with columns like:

• Original title

• Content type (article, video, podcast, download)

• New Substack section

• Primary topic

• Tags

• Call to action

• Published or Draft

Don’t worry about moving everything at once.

Instead, sort it into categories first.

You’ll quickly discover which topics you have plenty of content for and where there may be gaps you’d like to fill.

Step 3: Decide the Job of Each Piece of Content

Before you move a post into Substack, ask yourself one question:

What job is this content doing?

Every piece of content should have a clear purpose before you publish it.

For example, is it:

• Delivering value to your free subscribers?

• Providing exclusive content for your paid subscribers?

• Building trust with potential clients?

• Leading readers toward a specific offer?

• Supporting a course, community, or membership?

• Introducing your podcast or another piece of content?

• Answering a question your audience asks repeatedly?

Once you know the job of the content, the call to action becomes obvious.

If it’s a paid subscriber post, your CTA may simply be to continue the conversation in the comments or explore another premium resource.

If it’s designed to attract clients, the next step might be booking a strategy session, joining your community, or downloading a resource.

Step 4: Move Content One Section at a Time

This is where many creators overwhelm themselves.

They try to migrate years of content over a weekend.

Instead, pick one section.

Complete it.

Then move to the next.

As you copy posts into Substack:

• Assign the correct section.

• Add relevant tags.

• Update links.

• Refresh outdated information.

• Add your chosen call to action.

• Link to related posts whenever possible.

Little by little, you’ll build a publication that’s easy to navigate instead of becoming another content archive. As you fill the section make sure to create a feature posts section on your home page (we discuss how to do this in the Substack Setup Intensive.

Step 5: Don’t Feel Like You Have to Move Everything

This might be the most freeing advice I can give you.

Not every Instagram post deserves a permanent place on Substack.

Not every Patreon update needs to come with you.

Ask yourself:

“Would this still help someone a year from now?”

If the answer is yes, it’s probably worth moving.

If not, let it stay where it is.

Substack isn’t just a filing cabinet.

It’s your growing library of your best ideas.

Remember Why You’re Making the Move

Whether you’re coming from Patreon or social media, you’re not simply changing platforms.

You’re creating a place where people can actually follow your thinking over time.

Instead of chasing algorithms, you’re building relationships.

Instead of hoping people see your next post, you’re showing up in their inbox.

Instead of scattered content across multiple platforms, you’re creating a publication that’s organized, searchable, and designed to guide readers toward the next step.

A thoughtful migration takes a little longer than copying and pasting.

But the result is a Substack publication that’s sustainable, professional, and ready to grow with your business.

Do This First

If you’re planning to move your content to Substack, don’t start with importing posts.

Start by building the foundation first.

Once you know your sections, your organization system, and the path you want readers to take, the migration becomes dramatically easier—and your publication will work for you from day one.

Most coaches don’t have a content problem. They have a setup problem. 👀

The habits that create a six-figure coaching business are not always the habits that create a sustainable seven-figure company.

In the early stages, the founder is usually responsible for nearly everything.

You develop the offer. You attract clients. You deliver the service. You solve problems. You manage the details.

That involvement can be necessary while the business is being created.

The problem begins when the founder continues operating the same way after the business grows.

Many entrepreneurs become stuck at multiple six figures because they are still functioning as the primary practitioner, manager, problem-solver, and decision-maker.

They remain involved in every detail because their identity is still tied to being the person who keeps everything moving.

Doing More Is Not The Same As Becoming More Capable

When entrepreneurs feel pressure during a growth phase, their natural response is often to push harder.

They work more hours. Add more offers. Join more platforms. Start more projects. Change the website. Rebuild the funnel. Try another marketing strategy.

The result is usually more fragmentation.

Lia encourages business owners to resource themselves instead of continuously demanding more from themselves.

That may mean creating stronger boundaries, receiving support, caring for their physical and emotional capacity, or letting someone else take ownership of work they have outgrown.

A leader preparing for expansion needs to give from an overflowing cup, not from the last remaining portion of their energy.

You Do Not Have To Want A 7-Figure Business

One of the most grounded parts of this conversation is the acknowledgment that not everyone wants to build a large company.

A seven-figure business requires a particular structure. It often involves a team, systems, management responsibilities, financial complexity, and a willingness to release direct control.

That path is not more evolved or meaningful than building a smaller business.

The right goal depends on the life you want.

Before choosing a revenue target, Lia suggests defining your broader vision.

Consider the time you want for family, rest, relationships, spiritual practice, travel, creativity, and service.

Then ask whether your current business model makes that life more possible.

Many coaches pursue six or seven figures because those numbers have become symbols of success. They may not have considered whether the structure required to reach those numbers matches the way they want to live.

A meaningful business vision cannot be separated from a meaningful life vision.

Build The Business Around Your Definition Of Success

Success may mean leading a large company with a full team.

It may mean maintaining a small, highly profitable practice.

It may mean working four days a week, traveling with your partner, serving a small group of clients deeply, or reaching a larger audience through automated programs.

Each version can be valid.

The important question is whether you selected that version consciously.

When the destination is clear, it becomes easier to make practical decisions about offers, hiring, marketing, technology, and operations.

You can decide what needs to remain personal and where automation would improve the client experience.

You can identify the responsibilities only you can carry and the tasks someone else can perform more effectively.

Without that clarity, growth becomes reactive. With it, growth becomes intentional.

Focus On The One Thing You Do Best

Both Lia and Jill return repeatedly to the importance of focus.

Coaches and spiritual entrepreneurs are often multi-passionate. Their interests, experiences, and gifts may span several areas.

Those qualities can enrich the business, but the business still needs a clear point of focus.

Lia encourages entrepreneurs to identify the work that feels most natural and energizing.

What can you do for hours without feeling depleted?

What transformation do you most want to help people create?

Where does your expertise produce the clearest result?

This becomes the foundation of your authentic role.

Focused energy creates momentum. Scattered energy creates confusion for both the entrepreneur and the potential client.

Lia compares it to planting a seed. You cannot dig it up every day to check whether it is growing.

The work needs attention, nurturing, time, and trust.

Create A Clear Client Journey

A sustainable business needs more than a compelling message.

It needs a clear journey that helps clients move from where they are to where they want to be.

Many experienced coaches can help people with a wide range of challenges. That does not mean every possibility should be included in the offer or message.

Clarity requires choosing the transformation you want to guide.

Once that transformation is clear, you can identify the logical steps clients need to take.

A defined client journey makes marketing easier because potential clients can understand what you help them do.

It also makes delivery easier because the process no longer has to be reinvented for every person.

This is where systems, automation, and team support can strengthen the experience without removing the human connection.

Use Automation To Protect The Work Only You Can Do

Automation is not about replacing care.

It is about using care where it creates the most value.

Scheduling, reminders, onboarding instructions, educational resources, progress tracking, and administrative communication can often be simplified or automated.

AI and other business tools can reduce repetitive work and make the client experience more consistent.

This gives the founder more energy for the moments where their presence, insight, intuition, and expertise matter most.

Lia recommends introducing these systems gradually.

Choose one area. Improve it. Test it. Resolve the problems. Then move to the next area.

Attempting to rebuild everything at once often creates more overwhelm than progress.

Small improvements made consistently become the infrastructure for future growth.

Ethical Growth Combines Strategy And Intention

The conversation also explores the tension many conscious entrepreneurs feel around marketing.

Some resist established marketing structures because they associate them with pressure, manipulation, or a singular focus on revenue.

Lia offers a more balanced perspective.

Teams, systems, visibility strategies, and operational processes are not inherently misaligned. They can be used to serve clients more effectively, reach more people, and create a more stable business.

The intention and energy beneath the strategy matter.

A business can use sound marketing principles without treating people as transactions.

It can build systems without becoming impersonal.

It can pursue revenue while remaining grounded in service.

The goal is not to reject strategy. It is to place strategy beneath a clear purpose.

The Founder Cannot Remain The Business Forever

As a company grows, it begins to become an entity that can operate beyond the founder’s direct involvement.

This creates new possibilities.

The founder may eventually become the visionary, advisor, shareholder, or steward of the mission rather than the person responsible for daily delivery.

That transition can be emotionally difficult.

The business may feel like something the founder created through years of effort, sacrifice, and personal care. Releasing control can feel like abandoning it.

In reality, letting go may be the decision that allows the business to become sustainable.

The language of leadership begins to change:

“I will do it” becomes “We will do it.”

Eventually, “We will do it” becomes “The team has a process for doing it.”

This shift creates space for the founder to lead at a higher level and for the business to develop value beyond the founder’s personal labor.

Sustainable Success Begins With Honest Choices

Some people genuinely love working long hours.

Others want a four-day week, extended travel, more family time, or the freedom to step away from the business regularly.

Neither choice is automatically right.

The danger comes from presenting one person’s ideal as the universal definition of success.

Leah encourages entrepreneurs to have an honest conversation with themselves.

What do you want your days to feel like?

How much responsibility do you want to carry?

How many people do you want to manage?

What type of impact do you want to create?

How much space do you want for the rest of your life?

A business designed around honest answers becomes easier to lead.

I think that’s only part of the story.

Yes, Substack is where we publish articles.

Yes, recommendations help us grow.

However, I don’t believe that’s what makes Substack so powerful.

I think Substack is a relationship platform.

Publishing is simply how the relationship begins.

Everything after that determines whether someone becomes a loyal reader, a paid subscriber, or eventually a client.

That’s a very different way of thinking about growth.

Instead of asking,

“How do I get more subscribers?”

I find myself asking,

“What experience does someone have after they subscribe?”

That’s the question very few people are talking about.

Your Foundation Determines What Happens Next

Imagine building a beautiful house.

The paint is perfect.

The furniture is gorgeous.

The landscaping is incredible.

Unfortunately, the foundation underneath the house is cracked.

Eventually, everything above it begins to shift.

I think the same thing happens on Substack.

Many publications have wonderful content sitting on top of an unfinished foundation.

The articles aren’t the problem.

The foundation is.

When I land on a publication, I naturally start noticing things.

Can I immediately tell who this publication is for?

Does the homepage help me understand what I’ll gain by subscribing?

Is the About page personal enough that I begin trusting the writer?

Has the welcome email been customized?

Is there a logical next step if I want to go deeper?

Would I know this person offers coaching, courses, or a community if they never mentioned it in an article?

Those aren’t little details.

Together, they shape the entire reader experience.

Every Article Should Lead Somewhere

One of the biggest mindset shifts I’ve had this year is realizing that content doesn’t need to sell.

Content needs to move people.

A great article creates curiosity.

The next article builds trust.

The welcome email creates connection.

The About page builds confidence.

The community creates conversations.

Eventually, those conversations become opportunities.

That’s a client journey.

When those pieces work together, your content no longer has to do all the heavy lifting.

Instead, every part of your publication quietly supports the next step.

Growth Isn’t the Same as Momentum

It’s easy to become obsessed with subscriber numbers.

I’ve done it too.

Another ten subscribers feels exciting.

Another hundred or thousand feels even better.

However, subscriber growth doesn’t automatically create business growth.

I’ve seen publications with relatively small subscriber counts consistently attract clients because they built trust intentionally.

Meanwhile, I’ve also seen much larger publications struggle because readers had nowhere meaningful to go after subscribing.

Numbers feel impressive.

Momentum changes businesses.

Momentum happens when every new reader naturally discovers another reason to stay connected.

The Hidden Cost of an Unfinished Publication

Creating content takes time.

Writing thoughtful articles takes energy.

Building relationships through Notes takes intention.

Consequently, it feels frustrating when someone discovers your work, enjoys it, and quietly disappears.

Not because they weren’t interested.

Simply because nothing invited them to continue the relationship.

That realization completely changed how I look at my own publication.

Instead of asking,

“What should I publish next?”

I started asking,

“If someone discovered me today, what would they experience over the next week?”

Honestly, that question has improved my publication far more than writing another article ever could.

Why I’ve Started Doing Substack Audits

Over the past few months, I’ve found myself enjoying something I didn’t expect.

I love looking at someone else’s Substack with fresh eyes.

Not because I’m trying to critique their writing.

In fact, most of the time, the writing is excellent.

Instead, I’m looking at the entire experience.

I’m asking questions like:

• Would I subscribe?

• Would I understand who this publication is for?

• Does the homepage build confidence?

• Does the welcome email make me feel welcome?

• Is there an obvious next step?

• Where does the reader journey quietly end?

Almost every audit uncovers two or three small improvements that could dramatically change what happens after someone subscribes.

Interestingly, those improvements usually have nothing to do with writing more articles.

They have everything to do with building a stronger foundation.

The goal is creating a publication that works for you.

One that helps readers understand who you serve.

One that builds trust naturally.

One that makes the next step feel obvious.

One that continues working while you’re living your life instead of constantly feeling like you have to produce something new.

Not one that’s powered by exhaustion.

One that’s powered by connection.

Without a clear message guiding that interpretation, every person in the room may walk away with a completely different understanding.

Find the one idea.

Not every idea.

Not every framework.

Not every insight you’ve accumulated over years of experience.

Every next step should be:

• Concise

• Time-sensitive

• Assigned

Think about how often we create thoughtful content that simply...ends.

The reader finishes.

And nobody knows what comes next.

Your audience shouldn’t have to guess.

Strong communication answers three questions:

• What does this mean?

• Why does it matter?

• What should I do now?

Whether you’re leading a team or inviting someone into your coaching program, those questions matter.

Clarity creates movement.

Feedback That Helps People Grow

Another highlight of our conversation was Patricio’s LIFT framework for giving feedback:

Locate the moment

Identify the behavior

Focus on the impact

Turn toward growth

So much feedback becomes emotional because it’s vague.

People hear criticism instead of guidance.

When Brilliant People Stay Silent

One story Patricio shared stayed with me long after we finished recording.

He described working with an incredibly intelligent professional who consistently held back during meetings.

But if your foundation is not solid, that visibility does not turn into clients. People land on your publication, read a post or two, and leave because there is no clear path forward. No sense of who you are or how you can truly help them.

A strong foundation comes first. When your Substack is positioned clearly, your content has purpose, and your offers feel like a natural next step, then the visibility you create actually leads somewhere meaningful.

Better to have a smaller, engaged audience that resonates with your work than a large, disengaged list full of people who were never going to be your ideal clients.

The Creative Cost of an AI World

Another major thread in this episode was the role of artificial intelligence in creativity.

Douglas was thoughtful here. Not reactionary. Not dismissive. He clearly understands the tools and has used them in practical ways.

At the same time, he was honest about what gets lost when convenience replaces craft.

That tension is one many of us feel.

Technology can speed things up. It can lower barriers. It can open new doors.

But speed is not the same as soul.

Access is not the same as artistry.

Information is not the same as wisdom.

One of the clearest takeaways from this conversation is that creativity still asks something of us:

• Attention

• Lived experience

That kind of success story is always interesting on the surface, but what made this one compelling was what it revealed underneath.

Cultural moments are not always engineered in neat, predictable ways. Sometimes they happen because a story lands at exactly the right time, with exactly the right energy, for exactly the right audience.

Power Rangers was not just a television hit.

It was a phenomenon.

Why Great Stories Still Need Strong Conflict

One of my favorite parts of the episode was the conversation about villains.

Douglas made the point that every memorable story needs a great villain, and not a flat one.

Not a cartoon created only for the sake of conflict.

A real antagonist needs an inner logic, a wound, a worldview, and a reason they believe they are right.

That is true in film.

It is also true in business, leadership, and transformation.

People do not connect to polished perfection. They connect to tension, stakes, and meaningful change. They connect when something real is being wrestled with.

This matters for anyone using content to grow authority.

If your message has no contrast, it often has no charge.
If your story has no tension, it often has no movement.
If your work never names what people are up against, it may never fully land.

They help people make sense of conflict.

What Hollywood Has Lost and What Still Endures

There was also a strong sense of nostalgia in this conversation, but not in a shallow way.

Douglas reflected on an era when live experiences required more effort, when family entertainment carried more innocence, and when storytelling was allowed to center heart without constantly chasing shock value.

That landed for me.

While the tools change, the human need underneath does not.

People still want stories with meaning.

A lot of creators struggle here because they think charging means withholding.

At some point, someone who loves your work may want more than another article.

Your job is not to chase people.

Your job is to make the path visible.

That could look like:

A question to reply to.

A workshop invitation.

A community.

A way to work together.

Not every post needs every door.

But every post needs a door.

Trust Comes From Your Lens, Not More Information

One of the biggest mistakes I see coaches make is trying to prove their value by putting everything they know into every post.

But more information does not automatically create more trust.

Sometimes it just creates overwhelm.

People do not hire you because you know facts.

They hire you because they trust the way you see the problem.

Your content should reveal your lens.

Your perspective.

Your process.

The way you guide someone from where they are now to where they want to be.

A better structure is:

Tell the story.

Share the lesson.

Create the perspective shift.

Offer the next step.

That is how content becomes a conversation.

Deborah Yager’s story is one of them.
